A Practice in Surviving

Next week marks 12 months since I had two life-saving surgeries. These surgeries did indeed save my life, but they weren't the only deciding factor in me being here to tell my story. We often hear about different medical modalities involved in the treatment of cancer: chemo, radiation, immunotherapy etc. What we don't hear about often enough are the more alternative modalities such as breathwork, meditation, essential oils, spiritual practices, and many more.

I can only speak for myself when I talk about the alternative modalities that I found invaluable in the acceptance and treatment of my cancer. And it's not so much treating cancer as it is the support they offered on an emotional, physical, and mental level. My journey, from the lead up to the diagnosis, to the treatment and consequent final surgery spanned over the course of several years.

My family and friends played an integral role throughout my cancer journey, but it was my spiritual beliefs and practices that provided me with the grounding, strength and tools that enabled me to cope with the barrage of invasive medical treatments.

It was indeed a Holistic support system that got me through. It was never just one thing, one person or one medical intervention that singularly helped in my recovery. And I will say that the recovery is still ongoing, I'm still using the holistic tools in my toolbox.

Ultimately, this is why I decided to start my own business as a Holistic Counsellor. I learnt so much about myself, my strengths, my abilities whilst on this journey, it was a practice in surviving. My beliefs, my spiritual practices, and the support of loved ones formed my holistic toolbox.

I now want to be that support, that alternative safe space. Whether that be in helping someone find themselves or their voice, giving different perspectives or creating a safe and sacred space. where people can begin their own journey in healing. It's through my own trauma and life experiences that has made me so aware of how especially important it is that we have a holistic approach to any aspect of our lives.
